    Except it's not quite that easy, US prices are 9% VAT (a.k.a sales tax) exclusive, EU/UK prices are 25% VAT inclusive.

    While EU has 25% VAT the US has only 9% VAT though, so, an apples to apples comparison is $381.49 vs €349.99 vs £349.99 - or, in dollar terms, $381.49 vs $392.20 vs $468.99. UK is getting price gouged, true, but the EU really isn't.

    Alternatively, price without sales tax is $349.99 vs $313.49 vs $374.99 for US/EU/UK respectively. But whatever.

    Actually, the US has no sales tax. Many states, counties, and cities do, at varying levels.
    My state's law caps the sum of all sales taxes at 8.25%

    I'm told Washington and Oregon see a lot of cross-border traffic as one of them doesn't charge sales tax to folks from out of state.

    It seems that in this latest console generation, gamers are doomed to suffer of joystick drift forever: first there was the Switch and its infamous joycon drift (which got so bad that Nintendo is now replacing failed joysticks for free), then there are reports of the PS5 experiencing the same woes.

    Now it's the turn of the Steam Deck, but Valve claims it's a software bug and "it has already been fix, just update your OS":

    Not a great year for Square Enix, as it shows that they stopped caring about gamers and are en-route to become the next Konami:

    - The CEO's New Year letter: "the future is blockchain and NFTs".

    - Then, they said that Japanese studios should not make Westernized games (while there is some truth to this, it doesn't mean that a Japanese studio can't come with a good FPS or something that Westerners love - that's quite xenophobic IMO. A good game is a good game, no matter who made it or from where it got influenced, and this comes from a guy that absolutely despises most Western games!)

    - Oh, you say Japanese should make Japanesey games? Well, if only you let them do so: just ask Sonic's father, Yuji Naka, who just nuked all bridges with Squenix (and then some) after his last project (Balan Wonderworld) imploded due to good ol' Executive Meddling. OK, Naka is no sweetheart, but man, Squenix management is plain criminal, to both their staff AND gamers!

    - And in a move to advance both their goals of not caring anymore on Western games and pivoting their business model towards buttcoins and craptoscams, they just had a firesale where Embracer Group (the THQ Nordic dudes) picked nearly every foreign Squenix IP (including Tomb Raider and Deus Ex) and studio for CHEAP ($300M), with only some fire damage after a string of poorly received bad games. But don't worry, Squenix CEO is putting that cash to good use... by investing it in buttcoins/craptoscams.

    Remember: this is the same publisher that now considers that people no longer play games for fun, but as a unpaid full-time job, hence the need for pushing buttcoins/craptoscams down the gamers' throats. Kiss your Final Fantasies goodbye, people. This is Konami 2.0 which we're seeing here, live and uncensored.

    PSA: Don't buy Sonic Origins. Sega fucked it. HARD.

    What promised to be the ultimate Classic Sonic remake to best 'em all turned out to be a total disaster:

    What we were promised:
    - More Retro Engine goodness
    - A proper Sonic 3 remake for modern machines (sans the cursed M.J. tunes)
    - Sonic 1/2 console/PC ports from the Retro Engine codebase (which was cellphone-exclusive until now)
    - Five games, one low price
    - Proper widescreen support, since noone owns 4:3 displays anymore
    - More love from Taxman, Stealth, and friends, sprinkled with Vintage Sonic Team goodies

    What we got:
    - A whole pile of BUGS, because Sega had to half-ass and rush things in house due to Japanese pride (including breaking things that were working for AGES), instead of letting Stealth/Taxman its magic. Is that the toxic stench of burning bridges?
    - Subpar music (particularly in Sonic 3), despite having Jun Senoue on board
    - No widescreen support when playing on Classic mode (even when every prior release of Retro Engine-based ports had that as a selling point)
    - Denuvo, because of fucking course Sega had to deliver that pandemic this time too!
    - Very confusing (and pricey!) DLCs, because Sega knows that keying in the digits of your Visa/MC is far easier than just playing the games themselves
    - $40 for games we're tired of buying over and over and over

    Well done Sega... NOT!

    So Persona 3/4/5 fell to the hands of the infamous localiser that wrote 'big brudder' in Higurashi. Surprised this wasn't mentioned anywhere here.

    Dolphin just dropped support for Windows 7, the last decent Windows version ever. Oh, and Windows 8.x too, but nobody will shed a tear on those.

    Now herpes Windows 10 is mandatory. Or you can bail out to Linux and trade insanities, just like I did a decade ago.
    Or I guess you can buy a LOLMAC HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAnope!

    Many new games won't run on Windows 7/8.x anyway, so either you already got forceupgraded to W10, just bought a shiny new PC and smeared it with W11 vomit, or already tested your luck with WINE/Proton.

    Not to mention that there's the fact nothing actually works/is properly supported on macOS anymore because post-10.11 has broken things constantly for no good reason too. (Merging the dev teams for iOS and MacOS was the worst idea ever, literal Windows 10-tier QA now.)

    WINE/Proton seems like the way to go. If something doesn't work in it, well, the developers can fuck themselves for not taking into account that people don't want to have to be confined to a specific piece of shit and it's becoming a somewhat more common concern, surprisingly. A lot of people only hang onto Windows for gaming or some weird thing that doesn't work in WINE properly (and would run poorly in a VM since any NT 6 based OS runs godawful in a VM)

    Gaming has never been a priority for Mac, ever since the first Mac (apparently Steve Jobs wasn't a fan of videogames), so nobody serious would buy one (much less an ARMac) for gaming. Of course, Apple makes mad cash over iOS gaming, but why would you want to play cellphone games on a PC? (spare me the "muh exclusives", please - fact is, a large part of cellphone games are rubbish or outright scams). The sole reason Apple hasn't fully unified Mac and iOS into a single platform yet (i.e. put a touchscreen on Macs) is that it would eat into their iPad revenues, but I guess it's matter of time (as Macs and iThings already use the same brains).

    As for gaming on WINE/Proton, it's more complicated. I've yet to try Proton (as my rule of thumb when buying games on Steam is "no tux no bux"), but I've heard Valve has been doing an herculean effort to offer a seamless experience. Unfortunately, it will never be a silver bullet:

    - 3rd-party DRM/anticheat solutions, especially those war criminals still bothering with kernel-level shitware. Dealing with DRM/anticheat on WINE is a minefield, while kernel-level garbage (that should be outlawed and punished with public caning over the publisher CEOs and shareholders) is obviously a no-fly zone.

    - Quirky Japanese games often doing sick stuff because rules were made to be bent. Even today, for many Japanese games (including a LOT of VNs), it's not enough with "LANG=ja_JP.UTF8 wine ./erogame.exe". Last time I bothered checking, one of my favorites (Recettear) didn't had audio AT ALL under any version of WINE/Proton, for example. Or try running the original Melty Blood - it took literally A DECADE AND A HALF for WINE to get sprites working, which on a fighting game it's the whole point of the software! JP devs often do nasty things on their code and you would be surprised of the fact that their games actually RUN on their intended target platforms...

    - Gamedevs fixations over MS-specific shinies (DX12+ being the main one), instead of going with cross-platform standards... wait, at this stage, OpenGL/Vulkan are getting confined to Linux, as Apple opted out of those years ago, and consoles have been always on their own separate leagues.

    To be sincere, I want more native ports, not compatibility layers, but I get that ports can be hard and not worth the extra 1% sales, but still... At least it's great to see the push Valve is giving to WINE, if only to protect their revenue streams.

    In it's current state, Proton is awesome with at *least* 50% coverage of the entire Steam catalog. It is so better I've pretty much started to run Steam exclusively for my needs - although still got Lutris installed for all the other goodies.

    Yep, even though some DRM vendors have started to soften, especially since the release of the Steam Deck, it's still not where it needs to be.

    Do try Proton on this. I can't promise 100% support but many games will in fact work out of the gate. It is amazing.

    I think that ship has sailed, actually. Virtualisation and easy containerisation makes pre-packaged games that run in a QEmu instance is just too tempting to ignore, that way you can all but ensure binary compatibility regardless of platform.

    It wouldn't surprise me if there are Steam gamepaks in five years that run on any OS.

    No, it's worse: it has been DOA, but it took Google 3 years and a few billion dollars to face reality: gamers DO NOT WANT streaming-only "consoles"!

    At least Google will be fully refunding the few people dumb enough to fell into this scam, if only to keep the regulators away. But make no mistake: the only content you should be streaming are bad videos, not interactive content! Just buy a console, people! (Or save your money or rob a bank for a gaming PC, if you really still care about modern AAA games).

    Paying for software you don't "own" is a thing. But paying for the equivalent of a thin client for videogames must be one of the most stupid ideas EVER from the entire tech industry!

    In my experience Direct X 12 API naturally has correct frame pacing/timing with the DWM in Windowed/Borderless Fullscreen modes where as you have to work for it when developing in other API's. iirc this is because DX12 is always promoted to a new display mode by that Fullscreen Optimizations shit where as that functionality is pretty selective for the other API's if you don't code things just right (Windows 11 apparently further improves FSO compatibility with the other API's).

    Portal 1 RTX can be downloaded now if you already own the classic version. (11.8 GB download)
