"global" is another good one. Pretty much anything except primary. And yeah, I feel like there's a bit of kneejerk me-too replacement. Words can have diffrent meanings in diffrent contexts. ... And I stand by my prior claim that we should be replacing "slave" with "maid" instead of "master" with "primary" --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by tomman I don't THINK Netflix funded any part of the production of LWA TV. They sure aren't listed in the credits outside of regional distribution. They slap the "Netflix Originals" logo onto any content they have exclusive streaming rights to, it doesn't mean they played any part in the program's development. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by tomman Oooooooooooooooooh yeah. Why in the hell am I dangerously stepping into audiophile territory just for Doom!?!??!? Because it is DOOM! Almost interesting fact: aside of Solitaire and Minesweeper, my first PC videogame (when I actually got a PC at home, back in 1998) was actually Doom 2, which was setup by the guy that gave me my first computer lessons. I don't actually KNOW what my first DOS/Windows game was. We built a 486 back in 1994, I think(the Pentium Math Bug was all over the news). It was probably a shareware demo off a "billion games on a CD" disk. ... I remember thinking Doom(shareware) was "cheating" by shooting me in the back, it "wasn't fair" that I could be attacked from places outside my view, and scrolling shooters were inherently better because you could "see everything". (Contra Dude was WAY more badass than Doom Guy.) --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

First videogame: unknowable. One of my earliest memories is riding home in the back seat of the car next to a brand-new Vectrex(doubtless bought on clearance), and the 99/4a is older than that. Also, arcade machines in the grocery store, pizza place, and Sears(Sears had a mini-arcade with a Space Invaders pinball, and I don't know why I remember that pinball so vividly). My first console game is... PROBABLY Minestorm on the Vectrex. Relatives had Ataris(one had a 5200, which is now mine decades later), but I was probably too young to be trusted with them. I have known video games longer than I have known me. That's... something. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

It is less of a circus than I expected right now, but that is damning with faint praise. I'm excited that there is, at this moment, a credible path to neither asshole getting enough electoral votes, though! If it does, it'll be the first time it goes to Congress since 1825! ... And THAT opens a fun-but-unlikely scenario: the House selects a president and the Senate selects the opposing vice-president, for the most dysfunctional White House since the early 1800s! This is the most excited I've been since the Biden nomination ruined any chance of having a not-shitty president. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by Nicholas Steel The media is the part that's craziest about it. And the media has an interest in making it as much of a circus as possible. The rest of it makes sense if you understand one thing: The states elect the president, not the people. Each state gets a number of votes equal to their representation in Congress, and each state's residents select who their state is going to vote for. (This is not required by the constitution, but it is how all fifty states have chosen to implement the process). Ideally, states would distribute their votes based on how their respective populations voted, but only two states do this(Nebraska and Maine). There is not, in fact, a national election of the president. There are fifty preview elections occurring more or less simultaneously. ----------------------------------------- There's several reasons for it to be set up the way it is. Some are still relevant today, such as ensuring the interests of all citizens are represented instead of just the ones in densely-populated states(though the winner-take-all approach most states use in distributing electoral votes damages that intent somewhat). Some of those reasons are historical and don't make much sense anymore. The United States was conceived as similar to the European Union, where the states had a great deal of autonomy. The federal government greatly expanded its power during the Great Depression through use of a legal loophole*, so the idea that the states are voting for the president of the union doesn't really sound right anymore because the federal government is deeply involved in the daily lives of everyone. The reasons for there being an electoral college made up exclusively of people who are not members of Congress instead of just having Congress vote eludes me, though if I had to guess I'd say it is to prevent members of Congress from voting for themselves disproportionately. *Among the powers delegated to the federal government is the exclusive authority to regulate interstate commerce. The federal government takes the stance that everything affects interstate commerce, so they can pass any law they want. The argument is rarely tested, and the few times it has been challenged have seen mixed results. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

they even managed to kill the chip on the cyan toner, TWICE! (It's always the cyan cartridge for some reason!) I blame Dr. Wily. We've got a pair of Kodak inkjets. They've been well-behaved every time we've asked anything of them, and the ink's been this side of reasonably-priced. ... This is probably why Kodak shut the entire printer division down.
