I remember long pans from Master Keaton, and especially Figure 17 with its gorgeous watercolor panoramas of Hokkaido. People might not remember it if all they were watching back then was action series like Dragonball... A modern example is Kill la Kill.

Why would SATA disappear? Large drives (4TB and above) are still useful, and there might even some folks with optical drives...

I'm probably going to get a GTX 3080 (right now I'm still on 970 SLI) for Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn. Then perhaps a good 1440p display in the future.

The consensus is that the new cards are cheaper in order to preempt AMDs forthcoming entries. They couldn’t get AMD to reveal first, so they’re striking quick and strong.

They're also competing with the new consoles.

Posted by BearOso
As for SSDs, the best thing they do is shut the hell up. HDDs are the noisiest component. Getting rid of that noise is a huge win. Faster random access is a close second.

Mechanical harddrives are pretty much on the way out; SSDs are getting so cheap and common these days, it is inevitable that mechs will get the boot. Sure, a 16 TB mech sounds like a good idea until you realise the random seek times and data transfer speeds on such a harddrive are atrociously slow and severely hinders your work. Case in point, just going from mechanical to SSD I managed to build my embedded Linux project in only 3 hours instead of the usual 5. After that I realised Mechs are garbage for most modern workflows. :)

I'm thinking of archival, not daily workloads. Mechanical harddrives are still relevant for NASes and doing backups. It also makes sense to move large game installations to a mechanical drive when you're not playing them.

And where is this NAS? On my desk actually.

If there's one thing I hate about HDDs it's the noise, so that wouldn't work for me. Unfortunately my apartment is relatively small, so the NAS is still in the living room, but the HDDs are sleeping most of the time. (Which adds the wake up delay to the HDDs' access times.)

You'd be surprised how many are opting for small builds these days.

I noticed, but I hurt myself too much by limited working space back in the dark times, before SATA, when drives were still connected via ribbon cables and 'cable management' was an unknown concept.

I'm currently 27 hours into Horizon Zero Dawn. The graphics are amazing, but my GTX 970 gets only 30-40 fps at reduced settings. Hope to get a RTX 3070 or 3080 soon; or the AMD equivalent if they have raytracing and the drivers are good.

Multiple AIB's have documents leaked that indicate a 20GB edition of the 3080 will exist and TechPowerUp has seemingly gotten a leaked BIOS image from one of the cards (they'll post an article about it "soonish"), presumably it is being delayed to launch shortly after AMD's launch to undermine them.

Yes, but I don't think it'll widely available in time (given the non-availability of the current versions) for me as now I don't want to play HZD and especially CP2077 at low settings by that time. I didn't realize until recently that AMD's big date of October 28th is just the unveiling and not the launch date, so who knows if AMD will be an option. And RX 5700 XT seems to get 'only' 60fps on average (RTX 3080 gets 100fps at 1440p), a bit low for a card that I want to keep for at least the next 5 years.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an amazing game, enjoy it! It looks pretty awesome on a PS4 Pro with a HDR TV.

It is! I took the time to write down and organize the outfits, ammunition and weapons that are available to me now, so that I know which beasts to hunt to craft the best equipment. My skills are still kind of all over the place, and I'm still quite scared of the big beasts. They certainly drain my medicine pouch. Navigating the traps and potions list is also difficult (I'm playing on mouse+keyboard). But hopefully I'll get better.

Meh, I've enjoyed Commander Keen more than DOOM / Quake / anything else from id. Even the newest games come across as being designed by blood-and-violence-obsessed highschoolers à la Genecyst. The most fun I had with Doom was Korone's streams.

As for blocky 3D renderers, I'd recommend Descent 1 & 2 instead.
