Works fine on my machine - it shows a red un-clickable exclamation mark, which I think is intended behavior.

Here's a funny edge case though: If you go to page 9, log in in another tab, then go to the previous page, you'll be on page 2 but have page 2 marked as clickable. Only works if you have items per page set to higher than the default, though.

The exclamation mark means it's a hot thread, not that there's a new, unread post in it. That'd be the plus sign.

My fate is sealed: from now on, I'll have to coexist with broken devices every single day of my communist life. My routerbox is dying, it seems: first a HDD crapped out last weekend, and now, we're back to constant segfaults and kernel panics every time something resembling a CPU load happens. Yay me.

Allcrapper is once again doing what it's best for: crapping its pants with endless bootloops.
Reinstalling stuff (like the Googlebits) is next to impossible when you don't have a working DSL.

BUT! Turns out I never needed Kingo Bloat to root this crap: this thing was already half-rooted from factory (at least in the ROMs I've been using). You only need to follow that XDA guide to check where you should place every relevant file, and ignore the "delete Kingo" part:

    --- Common files ---
    /system/app/Superuser.apk (644)
    /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (755?)

    --- Architecture-specific files ---
    /system/lib/libsupol.so (755?)
    /system/xbin/daemonsu (755)
    /system/xbin/supolicy (755)

Don't forget to remount /system readwrite first!
No need to get "su" first - you're already root on the console (check with "id"), it's only the system partition that ships without the remaining required bits so your crapps can join the party.
After doing that, reboot, open SuperSU, let it finish the work, reboot again, done.

Fuck WhatsApp and its Suckerborg overlord!

I've tried to keep interactions with this absolutely awful proprietary "messaging" blob down to a minimum (basically: install it on devices that are not mine, and that's all). But then, since the world, my country, and everybody I know IRL is either a moron or is force-influenced by other morons to fall into the network effect, I've found my sanity increasingly questioned by this fucking crapp lately.

$MOM interactions with the crapp are of the latter (her friends pretty much force-installed the crapp, and now she has to use it to talk to family and friends, partly because our phone service is still dead forever, but also because said friends and family conveniently don't want to know better). She barely knows how to type messages (and she gets constantly annoyed by Google's keyboard trying to outsmart her) - anything else involves a very angry call of service to me (for example: attaching pictures, which is an completely non-intuitive task on a crapp where "text after icons" is a taboo UI design cue). So yeah, you can say WhatsApp is helping to destroy this family too (no joking there, sadly, for many reasons)

Reminder: you don't own your text messages on WhatsApp, no matter what they claim about noone else being able to spy on your inane talks.

This fact just bite very hard one of my uncles, which is currently involved in a quite nasty case with his former girlfriend (he lived with the girl for nearly a decade, never married, the bitch pretty much sucked him dry, and recently the girl cheated on him, fled and took with her pretty much everything that wasn't nailed to the floor, then as the icing on the cake, started spreading fake news about him. Pretty much ordinary stuff, straight from any soap opera). He was required to commit evidence of his Whatsapp interactions with this women to The Law™, so he had two options:

    - Surrender his cellphone. We all knows what would be the outcome (the phone is stolen "seized forever" by the authorities), even more when we consider that the involved device is a last year's flagship (a Samturd Galaxy S9+)
    - The guy is a lawyer, so he found a loophole of sorts that allows him to just provide the Whatsapp-sent media and conversation logs burned on ol' fashioned optical disc media (in this case, a CD-R), so that's the way he choose.

I must give SOME (but not much!) credit to Whatsapp: the media is neatly organized by date - every sent/received file is neatly timestamped on the filename, and even voice messages (which are saved to Opus) are weirdly sorted by week of the year. Piece of cake it was to make some folders by month, and drop the matching files required for the case.

Not so much for the actual conversations. Remember, you don't own your chat history. It's conveniently "protected for your safety". Sure, there is an user-accessible backup blob (a .crypt12 file), but it's crypted, and while the key is on your device, YOU ARE BARRED FROM ACCESSING IT BECAUSE YOU DON'T OWN YOUR FUCKING MESSAGES! Once again, here are your options, all of them awful:

    - Root the phone. Not an option here for obvious reasons!
    - Hope the phone has an hopelessly old Whatscrapp version installed (one that uses .crypt5 files for which decryption methods do exist that don't involve having access to the key). Yeah, right...
    - Use this outdated script, which involves replacing the installed Whatscrap blob with one of said outdated versions. Unfortunately it won't work with newer phones (i.e. anything running Android 7 and later - this Samturd runs 9) due to -you guessed it!- moar sekuritah.
    - Pay ransom to a bunch of Soviets that claim to have a forensic method to pull your messages out of your phone.
    - Screenshots. Yes, really. Be glad that Farcebook isn't DRM'ing the screenshot feature on your phone just yet! Oh, this also mean you have to make hundreds of screenshots, depending on how large are your logs and your device screen (and in the case of man-women interactions when they're in love, they WILL be large)

Suffice to say, the guy spent nearly half a day screenshotting his exchanges with her now-former (and in the lam) GF. Not fun, and it doesn't help emotions of a broken relationship. AT ALL. But that's Whatscrapp for you.

Did I mentioned that Whatscrapp was the reason BlackBerries finally died over here? (and why the last BB holdovers cried when Farcebook finally shut down the BB version two years ago). Yeah, jumping from the pan into the bonfire, that's how you get communism!

BTW: Samturd phones are absurdly confusing for no good reason at all. Please explain to me why people yearly drop $1K over those shiny turds whith a completely alien UI layer over Android, full of bloatware (why in the hell anyone would need Bixby in Soviet Venezuela?!), and with an stupid curved "edge" display with rounded corners?! My ZTE is a turd on its own merits, but Samturds are a special class of shit on its own.

Man, I can't wait to get my good ol' RAZR fixed so I can drop off this madness! Fuck mobile payments, I WANT MY SANITY BACK!

Bunch of snake oil. With their budget, they could make 3G much more secure (connect only to once cell tower at once, modulate power so that the tower-perceived signal strength remains constant, generate new IMEI for each connection), but instead they just separate it out and call it a day. At a bare minimum, they should make one with removable baseband chips where each baseband can only ever interact with one SIM card and vice versa.

They're fighting a losing battle though. The writing on the wall is clear as day, and it's a far more productive endeavour to see what positive effects these new developments have. Take the cashless society, for instance. Sure, the loss of privacy is regrettable, but nothing can be done about it, and when you see past this there are many upsides. For instance, I haven't seen hardly any gypsies for a long time now - they used to be everywhere, but now I mostly see them when I go abroad. With the old people dying off, cash is going to find itself in a position similar to, say, walking around with a funny look on your face and pupils dilated - entirely legal, but the police might want to have a bit of a chat with you. With time, it ought to become grounds for arrest. It's not hard to see then what would happen to the rates of crime and other such behavior. With no ATMs, how are you going to exfiltrate cash from the bank account?

(As for the concerns about human rights: it's like playing Russian Roulette and betting it all on red; either the people you agree with are in charge or they aren't, so that's 50/50)

    Aaaaaaand Apple stopped being greedy.

Expect them to grow their iPhone by a *lot* for a couple of years.

[edit]Spoke too soon - The 11 seems pretty decent for $699. The other two are like, yeah I guess if you like photography. Still, I expect the iPhone 11 to really *sell*.[/edit]

To me, it looks like a bunch of self-congratulatory GNU/GNOME 3 crap on a phone. In which case, you definitely don't have much control over where things go.

I saw an article on this other Fairphone thing today (https://www.fairphone.com), and it seems like a much better step forward that's actually useful to users. And it doesn't have outdated hardware or software.

If you're into iPhone, I'd wait another year until the notch fad goes away. Google ditched it on the Pixel 4, so I think Android manufacturers are coming to their senses, and Apple won't be able to pretend it's necessary or "cool" anymore.

BLU Dash X: Brickable Edition, volume 3.

Yes, this shit is back to me with a boothang. AGAIN.

Logcat displayed a bazillon file operations failing on /data partition because of a read-only filesystem. This implies that you've got filesystem corruption, so let's fix that. TWRP still worked, so I tried to check the partition on the Wipe menu (what an odd place to hide the [e2]fsck shortcuts). It failed. Tried running e2fsck manually from console, and it bailed out when trying to modify some filesystem flag, with or without journal replay.

At this point, I had no option but to do a factory reset and start over. Ugh. Tried that, partition "formatted" successfully... but the phone kept hanging at boot. Another look at logcat displayed the SAME EXACT ERRORS: the old files were still there, the /data partition wasn't wiped AT ALL!!! Tried reflashing the /data partition with the Mediatek flasher using the stock BLU ROM. This time the phone booted... straight to TWRP! Trying a wipe yielded nothing but errors (oh, and TWRP couldn't save its settings anymore since /data was now unmountable). Fuck.

Let's reflash the full ROM then, they said.
The MTK flasher went A-OK, then the phone booted... and got stuck at the bootsplash. Assumed that the initial boot would be slow. 15 minutes later, it was still stuck there. FUCK.

Tried a full format+reflash, but things turned up to worse: now the phone doesn't even boot anymore, battery won't charge, etc. So yeah, I've went from a soft brick (bootloop) to a hard brick (no boot). Surprisingly enough, the phone DOES get recognized by the PC when plugged (either as a MTK 65xx Preloader/PID 2000, or if VOL+ is held, as MTK's "meta mode"/PID 0003 - on older phones reaching this mode involves taking apart the phone and using a pulldown resistor to activate a testpoint). I've tried reflashing bootloader on meta mode, reflashing all partitions, and pretty much anything short of a complete eMMC wipe, but nope, the phone will gladly flash anything you send over the wire and tell that everything went fine, but won't boot. EVER. Fun fact: tried wiping the EMMC_BOOT_1 region (where preloader lives), but it gives a S_DA_SDMMC_WRITE_FAILED error. Looks like internal eMMC is bust on this thing.

So much for "unbrickable" devices, eh?

The Mediatek flasher has a handy memtest module that can check both RAM and eMMC, so let's try it:
    ERROR : S_DA_MT_DEDICATED_PATTERN_ERROR (3099)

[H/W] DA detects error on the phone while memory test with dedicated pattern! Please ask for help.
    [HINT]:

    Yup, eMMC is bust.
