Right, let's get our anime thread rolling again.

When we last met, back in September, I was halfway through Key, The Metal Idol and still had no idea what it was about.
There have been delays. I was two episodes from the end, and then basically couldn't touch it for a month. Tonight, I finish the fight.

I suspect the OVA had production issues near the end. Probably justifiably, as the japanese economy was busy collapsing into a heap of wreckage for the entirety of the show's run, and the era of the OVA was basically over halfway through.
The last two episodes of the fifteen are movie-length affairs instead of half-hour bites, and episode fourteen is just a big wall of people talking to each other, or themselves, as they all explain everything going on and what their part in it is. It is a boring episode, the rapid chain of big plot reveals lack any sense of drama or satisfaction, and it does horrible things for the general feel the show has had up until now.
    ...
On the upside, I knew what the show was about by the end of fourteen!

I think they were told they needed to hurry and wrap it up, and several episodes of plot got condensed down into two. At least they got the chance to wrap it up instead of just disappearing like Bubblegum Crisis did.

The final episode is a huge production, but unlike the episode before, it is satisfying. The climax at the Megalodome concert is a big, crazy, surreal mess, but it manages to play out coherently and largely redeems the wall o' text that was episode fourteen(and makes a pretty explicit spoof of the Akira movie's ending just for good measure).
It also includes this in the credits: "Megalodome Audience: All of you watching this video", which made me smile.

I find it difficult to really speak much about the content, because SPOILERS. The show is inscrutable at times, as the writers played their cards close to their chest. But it is a show I don't regret watching.

I now learned Crunchyroll is now dubbing anime to my glorious Latin American Spanish (including things like popular licenses like Re:Zero), and that someone also figured out how to pirate Netflix shit (fuck them for 1- not having a free tier, 2- zero Linux compatibility [outside installing Chrome], and 3- their "no simulcasts, EVER" model), so I guess I'll finally be able to watch anime made this decade.

Already took care of that. And the "hardware decoding because HD" bit (now you get why all of my UVD pains, so I don't have too plug the laptops to the external display) is also mostly solved. Even storage is not a problem anymore, thanks to my pile of refurb HDDs (and the fact there is still a small number of new dubs)

What I need now is time...

... and Netflix licensing titles I actually want to watch: their dubbed anime catalog is mostly junk to me, I'm not into mecha or gore stuff at all, yet for whatever reason they often license/coproduce that kind of stuff the most. Crunchyroll picks are quite interesting: for example, Free! got a dub out of the blue

I've barely any experience with Anime, but what's some good anime that is also available at https://www.animelab.com/ ? I got a free 60 day premium membership thing to try out at some point as part of McDonald's Monopoly thing they did where you collect monopoly properties on food items you buy.

Currently the only series on there that interests me is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (I've already watched FMA, but not this Brotherhood).

I liked Attack on Titan and "Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online".

Speaking of SAO, due to my positive impression of GGO, I've decided to watch SAO:Alicization. It picks up some time after the events of the original SAO, retaining a good number of the original cast. So far, it doesn't seem necessary to have an in-depth knowledge of SAO prior to watching, and the story is progressing fairly well. Hopefully, it'll continue like this for the entirety of the series.

Also following Goblin Slayer and Tensei Slime at the moment. I watch them back to back, usually leading with GS first. It's interesting how drastically different the ubiquitous goblins are portrayed in either show. I'm thinking extermination in one, and cooperation in the other (hopefully in the right order :D)

I still have no idea what I'm talking about.

Every new season of Sword Art that gets made is a new season of Accel World that doesn't.

If "Versus" gets animated, I'll concede the point.

Speaking of Titans, I really need to start season 3.

Currently watching JoJo has made me realize: I think I'd rather binge-watch whole seasons in a dozens of sittings or so than watching a show every week, even though it's the " True, authentic way™ " to do it.

It really depends on the show. Some shows don't lend themselves to binge-watching(and may suffer a lot for it), other shows were rather clearly made with the intent that you could watch them all back to back.

Serial Experiments Lain, I couldn't binge-watch. I sort of felt like I needed to let it sit after an episode or two every time.
Macross 7 you just SHOULDN'T binge-watch, or you will start to hate everything about it, especially Planet Dance.

Yeah, I think it depends on the show.

Something like Cowboy Bebop I wouldn't have minded watching every week or so (purely hypothetical of course as I didn't know about downloading anime in 1998 nor had access to Japanese TV). While CB's greater general storyline does advance every episodes, each episodes are, not entirely but for the most part, self contained.

Otoh, shows that leave you on a cliffhanger / to-be-tsuzukeru-ed -often with stories that progress more slowly (like Jojo's), are more enjoyable when you can watch them at your own pace / when they're all out, imo.

Fansubbing was different at the turn of the century than it is now. Same-day subs were non-existent, as people cared a lot more about getting it right than being first on the scene.
    ...
And people stopped distributing shows if they got licensed(I had to find "alternative sources" for Angelic Layer when ADV licensed it and they deleted all the episodes off the XDCC bot about when I hit the halfway point).

This still happens, at least for toku shows. I saw it happen when Zyuranger was licensed and GUIS removed the download links from all their Zyuranger posts.

Anime fandom believes that if a show is licensed you download the zero-day official subtitled streams and A. repost them as your own translation, B. make some stylistic edits and claim it is your own translation, or C. STICK IT TO THE MAN!
A and B should be accompanied by an explanation of how bad the official translation is, with no acknowledgement that you are using it(because that would undermine the entire argument).
