for real... I think that's at least a "yellow" on the Even Advisory System (no "can't actually" unfortunately) and other HSAS derivatives

No, I'm serious. I don't see what's so upsetting about my post. All I'm saying is that smart TVs are vastly overrated, and that I've never seen anyone actually use them (except as a sluggish UI to click through to get to the AV / TV) because they'd rather use what they already know, and also because it makes piracy a lot more complicated than it should be.

It’s not that your posts are upsetting, it just seems like your perceptions of modern society are, well, wrong. Your beliefs about standard prevalence are disconnected from reality.

I somewhat agree about smart tv interfaces, but they’re really not that much of an annoyance.

I don't know, from what he says on his posts, he looks like posting from a 3rd-world shithole like mine (or maybe Brazil, where anything electronic costs an arm and both legs):

    - PS4/XBones are uncommon to the point to saying "noone uses them" not being too far from reality
    - People stick to simple, AFFORDABLE things. Smart TVs are ridiculously expensive south of the border, y'know...
    - "Chink boxes" are not that uncommon, although none of those can stream from Netflix and other legal sources (which is expected, since the penetration of streaming services at such places are still not great)

...however, HDMI is commonplace, and so are newer TVs that are likely to drop VGA ports.

I do know someone with a smart TV (a LG model bought sometime around 2011 or so, when those were the hottest new craze). The TV has never ever been used for anything but broadcast cable channels (in noisy 480i analog!), effectively leaving the smart features in the box, unused. But hey, it looks pretty when hung on the wall!

Samsung has for a while (maybe still do) used Tyzen for their Smart TV's O/S, which is a custom version of Android. It's not compatible with most Android software... our 2016 Samsung TV is also extremely slow & crap performing when doing anything computery.

For example, if you try to use the Channel 7 streaming app it will often take a year to respond to the remote after pausing a video stream and often when resuming playback (and when beginning playback) the video will be heavily out of sync with the audio. Luckily we can clone a mobile phone display on to the TV wirelessly which can do all the streaming stuff 10x better than the TV.

Also the TV has bugs and issues if you use it's "Instant On" feature or whatever they call it, which suspends the TV when you turn it off instead of shutting it down (suspending lets the TV boot up from a low power state much more quickly). Bugs like a lot of the TV remote control buttons not performing the correct task, the TV adhering to the default settings for the Screen Saver etc.

Lastly the 2016 TV is laggy in general and I would never recommend it for anyone who games.

PS4 is probably the most popular of the current gen consoles in the US by a very small margin over the Switch (likely because of the head start, otherwise the Switch is tops here), I don't know where this idea that it's uncommon came from.

Tizen actually has nothing to do with Android. It started as a joint effort among a bunch of companies to make an embedded operating system built on Linux. History lesson: The UI uses the EFL, Enlightenment foundation libraries. Enlightenment was the hip X11 window manager before KDE and GNOME brought in the desktop paradigm, and gnome actually used it as its window manager for quite a while before bringing in sawmill.

(Also, if you have a forum account there, look for several Samsung-related threads by the same OP, as they're very amusing reads AND shows why you should never look for a coding-related job on Asian electronics megacorps, unless if you love using Excel and Word as bugtrackers)

Basically, Tizen still exists because Korean pride, not because it's actually good (it isn't). Also, don't say bad things about EFL in public, as Rasterman will dispatch the EFL Self-Defense Army to your house to save the honor of his baby!

My sampling is heavily biased for sure, but I don't think it's that off. People play their games on PC, because there is no good reason to do it anywhere else. The only reason you'd want to get a console anyway would be either exclusives (and nobody wants to pay $300 for a game) or split-screen multiplayer (which nobody plays anymore). Same goes for portable gaming. When I was younger, people used to have Nintendo DSes, but nowadays everyone would just use their phone if they'd want to play games on the train or where-ever.

Also, a streaming device isn't called a "chink box"

No, of course not. A chink box is an cheap SoC running Android or Kodi, preloaded with IPTV/Popcorn Time/similar, with absolutely no regard for copyright law or other unimportant paperwork. Not all streaming devices that are manufactured in the People's Republic of China (e.g. all of them) are chink boxes. Just like how you'd refer to cheap, low quality routers as "chink routers".

As for the HDMI thing, I don't mean that it's rare, but that if you'd want to connect a computer, VGA is slightly more common. But this might be a function of that people would rather permanently station some old laptop under it permanently connected than move them back and forth each time you want to watch movies.

As more and more people are watching Netflix, though, Chromecasts are becoming more and more popular. Although most would just watch it directly on the iPad/computer screen, as watching Netflix is hardly a communal activity.

No man, that's obvious satire, how could you fall for this?

...I thought, until I googled it. Turns out, he's telling the truth:

The following log is shown when the ecore_idler_del() function is used and the pointer address is deleted again.

When you use ecore_timer, ecore_animator, and ecore_idler, you can often see this log.

    ERR<4268>:ecore ecore.c:558 _ecore_magic_fail()
*** ECORE ERROR: Ecore Magic Check Failed!!!

In the documentation, and pretending it's all completely normal!
Jesus Christ, you literally cannot make this shit up.
Bonus: In the code block above, you can see evidence of an UB in the (library, not example) code. Can you find it?

Here's another gem from the same page (emphasis added):

Debugging your application enables you to understand its flow of control. With the Tizen Studio, you can use various application debugging methods. However, remember that the best way to debug an application is to not make bugs in the first place, so learn how to prevent bugs by using logs.

He wasn't joking about the key events either. Here you can find an official code example detailing it.

Their website is also somewhat "interesting":
✓ Mixing sans-serif and monospace fonts in code examples
✓ Embedding entire URL in a query string
✓ Indentation seemingly at random in code examples, in some cases even going backwards
✓ Surprisingly good design, giving off a thin veneer of legitimacy.

It does appear they've started using types though.
For anyone who is interested, you don't need a forum account to read the guy's threads. None of them even compare to the Enlightenment one, though.

Personally, I'd rather run two cables than suffer HDMI's myriad issues. Especially given the number of issues it has caused(such as people having to upgrade audio systems because their amp didn't support newer VIDEO features).
But I don't get the option.

No, no, I wouldn't use it to refer to Chinese people, absolutely not. That would indeed be very offensive. But that seems to be the most common name for those kinds of products, at least that I've heard. Not sure what else you'd call them. Piracy-intended multimedia devices? China boxes? Chinese boxes? Two of these now start linking together a whole country/ethnicity with shoddy workmanship in a more 'official' sense, so I would argue it is much worse.

(I think the list is a bit overbearing, I've heard many of these 'slurs' used in informal contexts by people who otherwise are not particularly racist. Churka, gajin, gringo, gwailo, gypsy, gora, half-breed, hillbilly, laowai, lebo, redneck, vatnik, and WASP are all ethnic slurs? I've seen "WASP" used in academic studies, and I don't know what else you'd call the nomadic group of people living in the Balkans. Wikipedia suggests "Romani people," but then you'd mix them up with Romanians, risk offending them, and also confuse a get a lot of people confused.)

But I digress, this thread is not about the quality of random Wikipedia articles.

That said, it probably is inappropriate to use in formal contexts, so it might be best to attempt to avoid such terminology in the future to avoid getting banned for hate speech.

Yeah, Nintendo is a notable exception, since almost all of their games are exclusives. For them, the amortized cost per exclusive goes down. I only mentioned the PS4 and Xbone as irrelevant consoles. As for portable gaming, I haven't seen many people using their Switches outside or in public locations.

True, although if you're not moving things around all the time it's not such a big deal. Also not that common on older laptops.

No, I know that 'chink' is considered an inappropriate way to refer to a Chinese person, but 'chink box' is standard if informal terminology for this kind of device. Like how you'd say 'chink router' without having anything against Chinese people.
