Posted by Nicholas SteelAs I recall, the hardware outputs the square waves on one pin and the everything-else on a second pin. But that doesn't mean the composition was ever intended to BE stereo, or that forcing it to stereo is going to work well. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by CaptainJistuceSure but in the case of the NES the hardware capabilities and performance limitations that composers faced more often than not resulted in their songs having neat stereo effects (stereo chords and sounds travelling from one side to the other seamlessly) and sounding really good in general in Stereo. Hmmm, not a fan of how quotes appear on the forum. Needlessly difficult to discern who is associated with what message since the names are detached from the messages. Posted by Nicholas SteelPanning seamlessly seems odd, given that the voices on the two pins actually carry different capabilities. Certainly, music has a strong tendency to use a square wave and a triangle wave in combination to create a desired effect, but... that's really an argument AGAINST separation. The older mods used to include a potentiometer to mix the two channels to dial in a stereo separation level, because complete separation was rarely desired, and there was always something that just sounded fracked up if it wasn't mono. Nowadays, kids are all "100% stereo separation is the one true way, the old mods suck because they use more components and don't give full separation!" --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

That's what I like about NotsoFatso, it doesn't split all the audio channels 100% left and 100% right. There is some leakage in to the other speaker which is great if you wear headphones. An example of seamless panning from one speaker to the other occurs when a composer sets one of the Square channels to have a sustain effect, so a sound plays out of Square 1 then Square 2 will play the sustained/fading element of the sound. You can also have the next sound begin while the previous sound is still sustaining/fading out so the audio overlaps a bit. It's much less computationally expensive to keep one channel configured for Sustain effect than to toggle the Sustain ability on/off frequently. Thanks for the visual update to quotes, Kawaoneechan. Ummm... the Nintendo doesn't HAVE two triangle waves. It has two square waves, but they both output on the same pin. Any separation of them is a gross emulation hack and not really Nintendo sound anymore, by any stretch. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by CaptainJistuce My bad, I did mean the Square channels and of course it isn't accurate emulation. I'm personally more lenient when it comes to enhancing a old systems audio capabilities than every other aspect of emulation. Final Fantasy - NES Followed a guide because no way I was going in that thing blind. Man, what a brutal game...Re-targeting (when enemies are already defeated)? Nope. Reviving KOed party members at the inn? Nope. When you use a tent? Lol, please. Painfully slow battles? Oh yeah. Really, just play the WonderSwan Color (also on GBA as Dawn of Souls) remake if you must. If you want an even more painful play-through, there's also an MSX version. Played it like 2 mins and noped out (also you have to hold CTLR during boot because reason). And no, that's not a problem with the video capture in the link; it really is that choppy. There's a grand total of 1 frame of in-between animation when you're moving around (I assume because the MSX wasn't too good at doing scrolling). Am in the middle of FFV Advance. Still haven't got to the new GBA exclusive Jobs. I highly recommend the Final Fantasy V - Sound restoration hack. Not only does it restore the SNES music (though the sound quality is not as good as the SNES of course) so you don't get the awful GBA musics but it also fix a lot of the performance issues of the GBA port. |

Big baby. Final Fantasy ain't that bad. Also, I dunno about the 'Swan version, but the GBA version is a wildly imbalanced mage supremacy festival due to shoe-horning in the later games' "MP pool and casting cost" system instead of the original "castings per spell level" mechanism. There's effectively no limit on magic because of it and you can just lit3 or nuke everything. The PS1 version adds retargetting dumb attack choices and batch purchase of potions without making it the Black Wizard Power Hour. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Meh, the thing is the battles are so slow, you end up having to run from most of them after a while, which shouldn't be the case imo. It's a good game... for its time. It hasn't aged that well imo. Unless you're speed running it (which involve pressing reset a lot). FFII has aged better for me (though it has a weird battle system). Oh yeah, the buying one heal/item at a time thing (which -unless you're very high level, you'll probably need a lot of for the final dungeon) as healing with your mages outside of battle is just not worth it usually. |

It has been brought to my attention that my posts about FF1 may've been excessively aggressive. I thought "you big baby" would be understood as a bit of lighthearted teasing and not actual insults. I didn't ACTUALLY mean "if you don't like FF1, you are a sucking baby." I just meant that maybe you should play Sailor Moon: Another Story instead, since it is meant for little girls. ... Actually, don't do that. SM:AS has a difficulty curve as gradual and forgiving as a cliff face made of nitroglycerin crystals. It was created by the same breed of misanthropes that think Castlevania II's map design is in any way REASONABLE. More seriously, I think complaining about the difficulty of FF1's combat and of resurrection afterwards misses the point of the game. It isn't getting by on the rich and compelling plot or the gorgeous spritework. The combat is intended to be tactical and require engagement on the player's part. Death is supposed to be more than an annoyance(I've actually long thought death carries far too little weight in most RPGs). Basically, it is a dungeon crawler in the old tradition. Ironically, the things I think the remakes actually need to fix(aside from bulk-purchase of items) are largely things that, while clearly bugs originally, are now "part of the game" and lovingly recreated in remakes. Things like the multi-hit bug turning your fighter into a whirling dervish of death by the halfway point of the game, crit rates rising linearly with progress resulting in an explosive increase in damage, and intelligence not affecting spell effectiveness. ... Ah well, at least they fixed all the broken spells(even if I got good mileage out of "HEL2 restores HP like HEL3 in battles"). And I THINK they fixed the separate inventories for weapons, items, and armor resulting in there being very little space in your pockets to carry around looted armor. --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

Posted by DonJon I used that merely as a lead-in to a more contentful post. It did in fact bring to my attention that I never really articulated WHY Final Fantasy with walkthroughs and auto-targeting seems a pointless endeavor. Only reason I brought it up, is it gave me a valid reason to circle back to the topic. Hence the lack of names or pasting. (I have pasted PMs in public before, but not without reason.) I threw in the sarcastic aside mostly as an excuse to make fun of the Sailor Moon RPG. Seriously, I have a sister that was a die-hard moonie, I set her up with ZSNES and the rawm. She wound up save-stating after every turn of every battle because it was such an overtly hostile SoB. I have no idea what Bandai was thinking with that one other than "my favorite sound is children crying". ... In hindsight, it may've been inappropriate for an attempt at not looking like a complete dick. Well, there you go, I'm rolling a one on my social skills checks. I am 38, for the record. Darn kids, lawn, etc. But I got my copy of FF1 after my copy of FF3 on the Super Nintendo. I'd had other dungeon crawlers before it, though, so I was kinda comfortable with the idea of playing for the killing. (Mostly Tunnels of Doom quests. My first RPG was ToD's pack-in scenario, Quest for the King) --- In UTF-16, where available. --- |

If you love UNO (the card game, not the Fiat subcompact car!), you will love this "mod" with... interesting new cards: http://web.archive.org/web/20060206190002/http://hotdeath.inanutshell.us/html/wingame.php There is even a native Win16 port (that eventually got ported to Win32 because Visual Basic is that cool) But then, we're in 2019, computers are for dinosaurs, and Visual Basic is certainly an endangered species. Fear not, because I found on F-Droid that someone had made an Android port (sans the trademarked names!) that actually gives you an excuse to have a cellphone! Almost: http://www.smorgasbork.com/hotdeath/ https://github.com/jpriebe/hotdeath (Apparently it's no longer on Google Play because Google, but since it's opensource, you can grab the APK at F-Droid) Some cards were renamed to more family-friendly names (for example: Shitter->Big Brother, AIDS->Virus, FUCK YOU->Retribution. However, the Blue Shield 2 kept its Joe Paterno branding), and it seems this guy forgot to include the Wild cards, but aside of that, it's the same game people loved back in the personal computerizer era. Oh yeah, and the AI is a cheating bastard, but you can actually tone it down (or up, if you're masochist!) Licensed Pirate® since 2006, 100% Buttcoin™-free, enemy of All Things JavaScript™ |
