Well, GBC was largely an original GB with color and more RAM and such.
Though I don't recall how good emulation GB actually was at the time (myself having just a 486 that could barely play anything. It could only handle ZSNES with max frameskip and sound disabled, which also meant many games would softlock).
I think no$gmb was considered one of the better emulators at the time, yet I remember its sound emulation was quite ear-piercing.
(and also, it cost money to play Color for more than five minutes.)

I think I used an emulator called REW for GB/GBC games once I got a better PC that could at least handle 8/16-bit emulation decently.

For systems with memory card support, not sure if it would be possible to choose between a separate memory card per game or a single card shared, as one might be more desirable than the other on different games. (I can remember going to Best Buy and it using fear-mongering to sell more PS2 memory cards for like Madden 2005, saying the game wanted the whole 8MB card to itself. I later looked it up and I think it wanted only like 1MB or something. But the idea of what if it did?
I think that was a reality on some N64 games, though. Again, I don't think N64 is in the plans, but if we're speaking hypothetical future-proofing ideas.)

Reading on MSX which used "PAC" carts for SRAM support, it sounds like some games would expect to use a certain bank on the cart or a limited number. I can imagine it being a pain when games conflict with each other.
But I don't have as much experience in that. I only had to look at it when working on a fan translation of a (MSX2) cart game which used the PAC as its save file storage media.
(MSX also has the issue that there are several distinct variations of the hardware. What is it, MSX, MSX2, MSX2+, MSX2 Turbo?)

SGB technically can read GBC-exclusive games.
If only to generate error screens. (a couple years ago, someone actually made an image gallery of all the "GBC required" error screens.
Though I don't think any went to the effort of that Dracula X PCE error screen minigame. :D

I do remember in the GBC days that finding a copy of Crystalis or Dragon Warrior I+II a few months after release at Target was difficult, but they still had plenty of copies of Pokemon Red and Blue. (that is, trying to find a not so popular game being difficult outside of GameStop or online stores)

Do you mean people who still play ZSNES and consider it a "good" emulator NOW?
Or those who played it when we didn't have better options for emulating games?

Maybe in Venezuela it costs 10x as much, but I thought FF3 SNES had been a pretty consistent US$50 loose game for decades. (well, I haven't checked that lately to see if S-E has put it or mobile remakes on enough prices to drive down the price yet, like how I recall Bust-A-Move was once a kind of pricey SNES game until enough sequels/ports and even blatant ripoffs seemed to have saturated the market enough to drop it down)
(though Chrono Trigger has had much more fluctuation, I think)

I had a 486/33 as a kid and no, the only way ZSNES DOS could maintain a reasonable speed was max frameskip and disabling sound (which would mean no SPC700 emulation, so hope the game you wanted to play didn't require CPU/SPC sync or it would just freeze).

RPGs for the SNES were always on the higher end of the price range.
I assume it was a limited market combined with more localization required (both text translation as well as bugtesting work on said text) combined with generally pricier carts (more ROM and/or battery-backup RAM). Super Mario RPG might be the only RPG I recall seeing at the typical average $59.99 US price, and that being because, you know, Mario, that they could hope to draw a wider audience. (like how Yoshi's Island could getting away with having literally the shittiest US TV commercial (I'd say the bottom of the barrel is NoA's awful "Play It Loud" marketing plan. You know, the one that arguably helped make EarthBound a flop.) and still seem to have sold decently. Only Mario had that kind of marketing power.)

Just thinking randomly, byuu. I can't recall, did you actually scan the entire US set? I think you did, and it was the manual scanning that was dropped.

But how did you do Claymates' lenticular cover? Was that a particular issue?
I only ask as I know the CIB copy I have had the cover basically falling off since I bought it on ebay whatever years ago. (if that isn't a reason for preservation, I don't know what is :D )
But then maybe those covers had a short lifespan? I know when I bought a Flintstones complete DVD box set the lenticular cover was ready to fall off almost immediately. :D

And then, turns out there IS an undumped retail game: the Euro version of Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 (released there simply as Motherbase). The existing dump is only for the NTSC version - for some reason the PAL release have eluded dumpers for over two decades. The game was officially released in Europe in mid '95, the cart does indeed exist in places nowhere near from cart dumpers (and reportedly it fetches high prices when sold online), and the ROM is unique as the NTSC version is region locked. So much for game preservation efforts there...

Hey, sometimes stuff gets missed. Especially from consoles prior to GBA when the warez scene was buying everything to stretch their e-pen releasing it onto the Internet ASAP after release (and begging to give them even bigger e-dicks with pre-releases).
I know in like Game Boy and Game Gear, English games would just get dumped and be automatically labeled as "US/EU" (assuming that both regions got identical releases, or even released at all in both regions).
Or another possiblity that was that they were dumped, without documenting the cart origin, and they spread online to ROM datters like Cowering who probably didn't really have the time to thoroughly research the origins of each of the bajillion games they datted.
I'm sure there's still GB games on No-Intro listed as US/EU which haven't been verified identical with documented redumps from both regions (cart label IDs, photos, etc.)
I know at least on GG, there was thankfully some huge fans like SMS Power willing to sort out mislabeled releases in more recent years.

You know the Japanese Mega Drive version of Marble Madness was apparently undumped until at least 2014 when suddenly THREE people bought the game to dump and submit to No-Intro? (they probably just saw the western EA version and assumed it was the same game)
Hardly the only example of a missed game. And that missed game happened to turn into an expensive game, that could be a reason. Not everyone can just fork out for a pricey game to dump it.

Cx4 still needs both of the Cx4 ROMs despite that, as I recall, one of them (the program?) was found INSIDE the MMX2/3 ROMs?

Looks like the oldest I have is v033.

I'll guess the really early versions could only very few, if any, games completely. Particularly games requiring APU emulation to not softlock.
When it didn't sound like it was quite yet at the point of replacing even ZSNES. That day would come someday, but not then.

I'm betting people will use MAME to run Windows 95 to run ZSNES.

How many coins do I need to insert for 1 credit to play Windows 95?

Not sure if there is a good place to say it, but reading a GameFAQs thread on SNES emulators (which is about as expected) someone called a certain emulator Hogan.
That name is awesome! :D

Fun fact: the Japanese version of Virtua Racing has SRAM backup save (for record times?). The export versions lost that feature (most likely as a cost cutting measure). But hey, at least they did changed the main menu colors (which were quite unreadable on the JP original), and the "VIIIIIIRTUA RACING!" chant (the JP one is lazy as hell).

You'd think for a game that reportedly retailed for $99US at launch, a couple more bucks for RAM and a battery wouldn't have broke them. :P

Not exactly great for the resume. :D

So there's a guy on RHDN who was released a few SNES hacks.
He just expands it to whatever oddball size it comes out. (say like Final Fight, but with say 150 bytes added on)

SNES9x does not like that and his response is like "sorry SNES9x sucks use higan". (after being told the first time just like "It's probably a good idea to expand your ROM to a more sane size first. WindHex can do it in a couple clicks...")
Too me it sounds like a bad idea, at least in stability to not expand to a certain size (what does SNES9x expect, to at lesat a full bank?) because you know, when writing code, you will screw up something somewhere.

But I wonder if you know, just how bad the potential for out-of-bounds errors with incomplete ROM banks.
I would guess the rest of CPU space is just random garbage?

I thought I should ask the principle to you, byuu, the one who defines Spectre as a 7mbit game? Is there any reason it shouldn't be 6.98731 mbit or whatever the used data comes out to? :)

Says byuu:
You're out of your damned mind if you think higan is ever going to run this 5-CPU, 23-channel, 10-plane, 260K polygons/s abomination.

I'll give it a couple weeks before the perfectionism in byuu strikes.

Nobody mentioned that it seems "Secret of Mana 2" finally got officially localized.
For 40 bucks for the Mana collection, I'd want to wait for a physical copy though (even though I already have a phys JP copy). Though I hear that may be coming as a LE.

And yet SD3 is ALSO getting a remake which will be localized as well.

So after waiting 24 years we go from none to TWO localizations.

Also, Romancing SaGa 3 is coming officially in a remake form.
Though I'm guessing digitally. Not sure if it is being packed as a compilation with, apparently, some Vita SaGa game or if they are being ported individually.
Nice to see, as the RS3 fan-trans has long needed a proper font hack (so we can name O U R P L A Y E R correctly without needing a ZST hacking tool)
