It even got an update for Android 8 (Oreo) that removed all ZTE-specific addons.
Even the chinese spyware?

Updates can't remove what's in all phone hardware anyway...

I meant the adups software, that allegedly was never supposed to ship to the US anyways.

As far as I can tell (running scanners) there's no adups or other spy/malware installed.

Sometimes "Back" is an arrow at the top-left of the screen, sometimes "Back" is a triangle button at the bottom. Is there some nuanced difference I don't understand, or is that just Android weirdness?

Depends on the app author what s/he thinks is appropriate. VLC for example has no back button (or ".." entry) in its file browser.

Posted by Screwtape
The middle button is "home screen" on a short press and "Open Browser" on a long press, the square button is "switch apps" on a short press and "split screen" on a long press; am I missing any other cool tricks?

Long press on middle button just opens a Google search bar on my phone. Long press on the back button opens the home screen customization screen. You can probably configure more in the settings, e.g. if call and camera functions can be accessed from the lock screen.

The phone only has a USB-C port for charging and connecting with a Real Computer, but my Real Computers don't have USB-C ports. Is a converter cable a passive thing like USB-A to USB-B, or an active (expensive) thing like VGA to HDMI?

I got a small Type-C to Micro B adapter with the phone, and bought an Micro B to Type A adapter, both are passive. I don't think they support USB3, but there ought to be adapters for that. Though your flash memory might not even be able to use USB3's faster speed.
EDIT: Seems your phone has only USB2 anyway?

I previously only really used my phone for web-browsing, shopping lists, reading e-books, and listening to music. I've installed Firefox, Simple Notes, Book Reader, and Odyssey to do these tasks, and they seem to meet my needs. Are there any alternatives I should know about?

My "offline" apps:
- Amazon Kindle (ebooks)
- BatteryBot (to display the battery temperature in Oreo) (via F-Droid)
- Bubble Level Gauge (via F-Droid)
- Comic Screen (comic viewer)
- Digital Clock Widget (better clock for Oreo)
- exFAT/NTFS for USB (mounting USB sticks)
- Google Authenticator
- INKredible (handwriting app)
- Lithium (*.epub ebooks)
- Mobi Calculator
- Mr. Number (call blocker)
- Notepad (by Dmitry Korotkov)
- Sky Map (via F-Droid)
- Spectroid
- Tiny Scanner
- Total Commander
- VLC
- ZArchiver

Games:
- Dolphin
- Inside Out (lots of ads unfortunately, especially when online)
- lichess
- Monument Valley 1 + 2
- RetroArch
- ScummVM
- Steam

"Online" apps:
- Anydesk
- Dropbox
- F-Droid (alternative "free" app platform)
- FanFiction.net
- Firefox
- LibreTorrent (via F-Droid)
- NewPipe (YT frontend) (via F-Droid)
- QR Scanner (via F-Droid)
- RedReader (reddit frontend) (via F-Droid)
- TeamViewer
- Youtube

Have you considered installing AdAway? It's not perfect, but it gets rid of most of the in-app ads.

The phone isn't rooted, so that wouldn't work. I just turn off WLAN (mobile data is turned off most of the time anyway).

And I also meant the many "special offer" (extra lives/abilities for cash) dialogs.

Is battery temperature a thing I should worry about?

Afaik there's conflicting info out there on what causes the battery to degrade, one thing mentioned being temperature. Quick-charging makes my phone very hot (even though it is really fast) so I use the normal charger from my previous phone.

- Bubble Level Gauge (via F-Droid)

Is that a thing you use a lot, or just a fun thing to play with?

The latter.

- ScummVM
I installed this, and it was pretty great! I booted up Monkey Island, listened to that theme-tune, then just for kicks I immediately walked back to the island map instead of proceeding to the SCUMM Bar. My phone hard-locked and I had to reboot it. :/

Works for me... ScummVM 2.0.0, using both the VGA and the CD versions of Monkey Island. Maybe try other game files?
And I thought that ScummVM's on the Play Store because that's where 99% of all Android users get their apps from.

- LibreTorrent (via F-Droid)
You download torrents on your phone? Isn't that... battery heavy, at the very least?

It's rare that I use it these days, but it only takes a few minutes to download, I don't seed for hours.

Dolphin

I tried this, and it's... not pretty. I mean, it technically works, but 11fps isn't really fun. :/

Try GameCube games like Mario Kart Double Dash :)

Posted by Screwtape
I imagine it might be better suited to, say, GBA or GBC emulation, but anything besides Dolphin seems to be a quagmire of seedy knock-offs and open-source code repackaged with ads. :/

Hence RetroArch.

For screenshots try SNES9x or BizHawk (uses an older bsnes core). SNES9x and bsnes are also available as cores in RetroArch.

French Dragonball dubbing

---

- Watched the rest of Release the Spyce. The twist in ep10 was well done, but the ending was a little bit unsatisfying. Maybe because the fight against the last boss was over a bit too quickly.

- Watched Battle Angel Alita - OVA and the new movie. Enjoyable, but you can tell they left out a ton of stuff.

I take it your motherboard maker doesn't have win10 drivers for your audio?

There's only a Windows 7 driver from 2009.

Above was the work PC; tried it on my home PC and it's smooth there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What does the work PC run? If it runs Arch or something like that it's possible you've messed up the font rendering.

It's a work PC, hence it runs Windows 7. :) Can't risk breaking other business-critical software (like CorelDraw X6 whose menu bar turns white in Win10) by upgrading, after all.

Also, is it only on that website+browser combination?

Yeah, as far as I know. Might be some setting in about:config, or video drivers. No dedicated gfx card so it's using Intel's integrated stuff.

set gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.rendering_mode = 5 to enable "smooth rendering".

Thanks, that fixed it.

Even works as soon as I switch tabs, no reloading needed.
